Painting for Absolute Beginners with Jeni Bate

This is an intensive 1-day class for anyone who would like to learn the basics of how to paint but doesn’t have the schedule to do a 10-part weekly class, or for those who have painted years ago and could use a refresher. Jeni teaches the class in watercolor, but the first three parts translate to all colored mediums (acrylic, oil, pastel, and to a certain extent, colored pencil). All materials are provided. Wear clothing that you won’t worry about if you splash paint on it, though watercolor is not an especially messy medium. You will work hard and you will learn a lot! You will go home with a number of reference exercises and online access to class materials, plus follow-on exercises. This class is great for ages 16 and up.

Watercolor Sketching with Kristen Olson Stone

People want to paint and draw but have been afraid or discouraged. So even if you're new, this is for you! I'll demonstrate, step by step, a method that will help turn anyone into an enthusiastic watercolor sketcher with no experience needed at all - it's fun too, so take out your sketchbook anytime, anywhere because painting = freedom.

As sketching forces you to slow down and record what is around you, it enhances the experience of being wherever you are in the world.  It can become a regular part of your life as well. I'm not kidding; people love the idea of being able to free their creativity without worrying about ruining their clothes. The beautiful part? You don't need expensive, bulky supplies either, your entire sketching kit can fit into a small purse or bag.Absolutely anyone can learn to sketch; it's the perfect thing for complete beginners as well as experienced artists working in other mediums such as oil and acrylic. We can enjoy the park for inspiration, or if you prefer, you can bring along your printed photos.

        This is a 1-day class from 10 am-4 pm.

Pack a lunch and take a break whenever you feel like it.

Kristen will begin the class with a morning demonstration, then for the rest of the day she will offer individual help to each of the attendees. This will be a small class so you will get a lot of personal help. Minimum 7 students and maximum 12 students.

Kristen is an artist ambassador for Royal Talens, she will bring some samples from Rembrandt paints for all participants.

If you have any questions, email Kristen at kristenpaints@gmail.com.

Painting landscape with a palette knife with Kristen Olson Stone

Join me for a very special 1-day workshop!  I'll show you how palette knife painting can elevate your artwork through the use of targeted strokes of thick, expressive paint and strong design.

I'll explain how to edit your photos in order to distill them down to the essential thing you want to say. As I demonstrate I'll show and discuss the specific colors I'm mixing as getting the colors right the first time is helpful in this approach to painting. I'll discuss the ways in which sculpted paint can add a suggestion of a non-visual element to the painting. Through this process you will learn simple ways to take your photos from a snapshot view to a representation of the experience of your landscape.

This course is perfect for beginning artists working in either oil or acrylic who are interested in palette knife painting as well as experienced artists who typically paint with brushes and want to learn a new and exciting way to add dimension to their work by making unique marks with a knife. As an artist ambassador for Royal Talens, there will be samples available for the workshop participants.

        • Beginner - advanced painters
        • Suitable for oil and acrylic painters
        • Painting demonstration will be in water-mixable oils
        • Tell the story of your landscape with strong design +  the application of thick and expressive strokes of paint.
        • I'll begin with a 1 1/2 hour painting demonstration followed by me going from easel to easel offering individual help for the rest of the afternoon.
        • Artists will work from their own photographs.

Kristen Olson Stone is a fine art teacher with over 20 years of experience, she is a Silver Brush educator and artist ambassador for Royal Talens. She has taught workshops throughout the world and was the lead instructor for plein air painting alongside Robert Bateman at The SKB Foundation.

This class is from 10 am till 4 pm with a lunch break.

In this 3-day hands-on workshop, you will learn how to make your own terra sigillata, how to add in colorants to develop a color palette, and how to apply terra sigillata to greenware to create your own original designs. Participants are encouraged to bring several demo pieces at the greenware stage (fully dried) to practice applying terra sigillata. Pieces will be bisqued and prepared for a low temperature saggar firing to bring out unique variations on the ceramic surface. The saggar firing will take place on the last day.

What is included, and what do you need to bring:

        Firing and materials are included.

Expressing Visual Poetry: Plein Air Painting in the Desert with Patty McGeeney

The purpose of this class is a crash course in painting basics. Value, composition, drawing, temperature, and edges. We will discuss and practice painting light which is crucial to painting nature. Also finding one’s expression, not just copying what’s in front of you but depicting what you see in a poetic expression of two dimensions and learning how to edit.

I am going to jam pack a ton of knowledge I’ve learned through many workshops and my own art education and experience presenting it all in the simplest way I can. We’re going to think about what we are painting and how we can express what we want to say. If you are an experienced painter it will be a great class for you to dig deeper into your craft. If you are a beginner I’ll get you on a simple path of building blocks to develop your skills.

This class is held during BAI 16th Annual Plein Air Invitational.

Patty McGeeney is this years judge.

This 3 day workshop is from 9-12 and 1:30-3:30 each day, with 1.5 lunch break. Minimum of 4 students and a max of 8 students.

The class meets at the Borrego Art Institute.

665 Palm Canyon Drive (at Christmas Circle) Borrego Springs CA 92004

You will paint on locations throughout town and selected by Patty.

        Smartphone Photography with Sandy Zelasko

        Day 1, Saturday, March 19, 2022, 7-9 AM

Part 1 of a 2-part series on how use your smartphone to create striking and intimate nature images. This 2-hour long instructional field session will help you “see” your subject with a skilled photographer’s eye. We will explore composition, light, color and shape while watching for patterns and complimentary backgrounds before we take the picture. Join us for a long list of tips and tricks to help you create beautiful desert images!

My intention, on day one, is to teach participants how to recognize a potentially outstanding image while discussing the limitations and best uses of the smartphone camera. I’ll scout for the most colorful subjects prior to class looking for small landscapes to include the flora in town. Locations will be within walking distance of BAI.

        Day 2, Sunday, March 20, 2022, 1-3 PM

Part 2 of a 2-part series on how to use your smartphone to enhance your desert images. You won’t want to miss this 2-hour long educational in door session specifically geared to take your nature images to the next level! We will be diving into the mechanics of Snapseed and other smartphone applications together and create images like a pro. (Please make sure to load Snapseed from the App Store to your smartphone BEFORE class.) This class will be interactive with a Q&A session.

My intention, on day two, is to share with participants how to navigate the smartphone application called Snapseed. It is a powerful post processing tool and free to download from the App Store. I will use images from day one as examples. Participants can follow along with their smartphones or just watch as I demonstrate on the screen.

        Please remember:
Students should bring a smartphone and have Snapseed loaded to that smartphone BEFORE our class on day 2.

Plein Air Painting during Palo Verde Tree Festival with Jessica Schiffman

The Palo Verde tree is surely “Borrego’s tree”, with its distinctive green bark, elegant branches, and a canopy of yellow flowers that splash across the desert sky and carpet the ground in gold during April of each year. What a perfect time to take a Plein Air class while the town turns yellow! Plein Air painting with oil with talented Jessica Schiffman!

Jessica will take the students to a beautiful location in Borrego Springs and paint two or more landscape paintings in this 2 or 3-day class. (you can sign up for a day day class or extend it to three day's) Teaching through demonstrations and explaining the steps of the system she uses. Emphasis is on composition, shadow patterns, contrast, color intensity, color temperature, painting alla prima (wet into wet), and perspective, creating the illusion of depth. There will be plenty of Individual instruction and some group critiques in an informal and supportive atmosphere.

This 2 or 3-day class is from 8 to 5. With a lunch break from 12:00 - 1:00 (or longer, light is less interesting in the middle of the day)

Minimum of 4 students and a max of 12 students.
