Raku Firing with Lynn Dee

Raku firing is a very immediate way of glaze firing. Bring 2 to 4 bisqued pieces to glaze and fire. We will begin with glazing instructions, as the raku kiln heats up. Long tongs are used to place the work in and take out of the kiln. As soon as the firing is done, the work is removed from the kiln and placed into cans containing combustibles, such as palm fronds and hay. The pieces are still very hot when they are put in the can, so they ignite the hay making lots of smoke, which creates beautiful shades of grey and black where there is no glaze. White and colored glazes crackle. When the pots are removed from the can, they are done. The finished raku work can be cleaned and taken home.
