Terra Sigillata and Saggar Firing with Pierre Bounaud

In this 3-day hands-on workshop, you will learn how to make your own terra sigillata, how to add in colorants to develop a color palette, and how to apply terra sigillata to greenware to create your own original designs. Participants are encouraged to bring several demo pieces at the greenware stage (fully dried) to practice applying terra sigillata. Pieces will be bisqued and prepared for a low temperature saggar firing to bring out unique variations on the ceramic surface. The saggar firing will take place on the last day.

What is included, and what do you need to bring:

Firing and materials are included.

Participants are encouraged to bring the following:

  • Mason stains they would like to try (1/4 lb is plenty).
  • Up to 10 demo pieces to practice application of terra sigillata. Pieces should be fully dried and unfired, no more than 8” in any direction. It is recommended to use a smooth clay body (e.g. porcelain, no sand low grog stoneware, earthenware). If the clay body has a fair amount of grog or sand, burnish the surface at the leatherhard stage with a rib or stone until a smooth surface is obtained. Clay can be any color.
  • Half a gallon plastic container with lid to bring some terra sigillata home.
  • Favorites brushes of various sizes.
