    Bio

During Ginger Dunlap-Dietz’s many years of working with clay, her fascination with mosaics was always present. Shortly thereafter, she met Isaiah Zagar, a Philadelphia master of mosaic, and was introduced to creating contemporary mosaic. That was the beginning and love for her mosaic journey. From that time, Ginger has worked on numerous private and public mosaic art installations and exhibits. She has continued to combine her clay work with mosaic. The most recent example, “Celebrating the Arts of Borrego Springs” can be seen on the Borrego Art Institute wall, Borrego Springs.

No More Cheese – How to Truly Capture People with Your iPhone, with Rossy Sanchez

    Saturday, February 18, 2023  3:00 pm - 6:00 pm

    Location:
    Community Resource Center
587 Palm Canyon Dr, Suite 125
    Borrego Springs, CA 92004

    Materials provided.

Whether it’s a holiday or just an ordinary get together, many gatherings end with the expectation that everyone will come together, smile at the camera, and say "cheese," even if they don’t want to.

Rather than the obligatory selfie, why not learn to take one-of-a-kind photos of your family and friends--even those who don’t like being photographed--and create unique visual stories everyone will recall for years to come.

The iPhone makes it easy to capture emotions (Aunt Jessie cackling), document an event (Dad flipping pizza in midair, and where it landed), and tell a story (when the pooch ran off with the grilled ribeye).

This three-hour workshop will cover iPhone Photos and Camera, the Edit feature, and some basics of photography to help you develop that “eye” that can transform an ordinary shot into an unforgettable memory of a loved one or two.

The class will consist of instruction, shoot time, and editing. I’ll even show you how to compile your photos into videos or slideshows you can share with the rest of the gang.

    You will learn to:

    • 1.     Light ‘em Up! – Photography is light. Light not only helps capture an image but when applied properly, can make it extremely unique. Learn how to play with light to add depth, character, romance, or playfulness to the same people you’ve been photographing for years. Who knows? You may just start to see them in a different light.
    • 2.     Get it Together! – You don’t have to wait till you’re in front of the Eifel Tower to take an “interesting” picture. The world is full of interesting backgrounds. Colors and textures abound in nature and in man-made objects; it’s all a matter of perspective. Look for them and use them to create one-of-a-kind photos of your own, even if you are standing in front of the Eifel Tower.
    • 3.     Don’t Shoot! – Photographing people that don’t like to be photographed doesn’t have to earn you a black eye. In this workshop, you’ll learn how you can capture the essence of someone without necessarily showing who they are. After all, there’s gotta be more to them than just a pretty face. Right?

If you’d like more information about the workshop, or my sense of humor, please feel free to email me at me@rossysanchezmoments.com

I look forward to meeting you in February.

The Art of Travel Sketching, with Kristen Olson Stone

      February 28, 2023, This is a 1-day class from 10 am-3 pm.

People want to paint and draw but have been afraid or discouraged. So even if you're new, this is for you! I'll demonstrate, step by step, a method that will help turn anyone into an enthusiastic watercolor sketcher with no experience needed at all - it's fun too, so take out your sketchbook anytime, anywhere. This relaxed style of travel sketching teaches you how to put down what you see around you, it could be your morning cup of coffee, the view from your window, a tree, a gate, absolutely anything that catches your eye.  I'll also show you how to draw and paint from your favorite travel photos.

      Artist Bio
San Diego based Fine Art Photographer creating Photographic Art since 2007.
Our natural world has served as the palette for art ever since Man picked up a rock and began drawing, writing, and sculpting. Nature is a part of us and the way an artist sees and conveys it says as much about the artist as it does the world. I’m grateful to be living in the 21st century when digital photography can help me express my artistic vision of our natural world. As a photographer, I am happiest shooting outdoors—taking in the sky, the surroundings, the colors and forms—and capturing the raw material that later, through digital process, I will finesse into images that transcend simple representation and become works of art that I hope people will find moving, inspiring and noteworthy.

Painting for Absolute Beginners with Jeni Bate

      March 10, 2023 9:00AM - 4:30PM

This is an intensive 1-day class for anyone who would like to learn the basics of how to paint but doesn’t have the schedule to do a 10-part weekly class, or for those who have painted years ago and could use a refresher. Jeni teaches the class in watercolor, but the first three parts translate to all colored mediums (acrylic, oil, pastel, and to a certain extent, colored pencil).

      Location:
      Community Resource Center
587 Palm Canyon Dr., Suite 125
      Borrego springs, CA 92004

All materials are provided. Wear clothing that you won’t worry about if you splash paint on it, though watercolor is not an especially messy medium. You will work hard and you will learn a lot! You will go home with a number of reference exercises and online access to class materials, plus follow-on exercises. This class is great for ages 16 and up.

Connecting Eyes, Heart, Hand, with Natasha Isenhour

      March 13-16, 2023, 9:00am-3:00pm
      Registration Deadline: March 03, 2023

      * All 2-D Mediums Welcome *
A comprehensive, deep diving, overview of applying the philosophy that your art is a manifestation of what you observe (eyes), combined with your emotional response (heart) and the expression of it with your hand.

Learn to develop your skill as a painter in this four-day intensive class where you will dig deeper into how to express your subjects using my intuitive approach while working with your unique voice.  All 2-D mediums are welcome! My expertise is in oil, pastel and watercolor, but the principles of composition, color, temperature and value are universal.

We will explore materials, methods and techniques to help you represent your subject.  This is about learning to paint in your own unique voice, not a formula seeking to teach all students to paint the same way. Through discussion and abundant studio time, you will be learning your personal path toward being the one-of-a-kind artist that you are.

As my former students attest, my singular goal is to have you leave a better artist, a better version of YOU. Some prior knowledge of the medium is required, however, weekenders, hobbyists as well as professionals will all gain personal power and artistic awareness in this opportunity.

As a New Mexico resident of 25 years, American Realist Natasha Isenhour captures her emotional response to her subjects with a contemporary edge in oil and pastel. Painting in plein air throughout the year informs her studio work through the on-site study of value and color temperature as it can only be seen with the eye.

Isenhour’s second solo museum exhibition was held in the Fall of 22 at the Taos Art Museum. Natasha was awarded  the “People’s Choice Award” of the Plein Air Invitational 2022 at the Borrego Art Institute. In the Fall of 21, Isenhour was one of the 5 To Watch in Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, and in the summer of 2020 she was honored with a 6 page feature in Art of the West Magazine along with several other inclusions in 20-21 in Southwest Art Magazine and Plein Air Magazine. In February 2023 she will be an invited artist for her 3rd year at the Borrego Springs Plein Air Invitational.

      Bio

Sonja Kodimer is passionate about the process of carefully observing and translating real life objects into beautiful paintings. She views the process as deeply meditative and reflective, a sharp antithesis to a world that encourages us to be reactive, seek instant gratification and spend little time observing ourselves and our reactions. Sonja has studied with Studio Escalier in Argenton-Chateau, France and the Ryder Studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The Art of Travel Sketching, with Kristen Olson Stone

      March 22, 2023, This is a 1-day class from 10 am-3 pm.

People want to paint and draw but have been afraid or discouraged. A Mixed-Media Approach for Investigating Landscape, with Kenneth Marunowski

      March 24, 25, 26  from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm at CRC

In this 3-day workshop, participants perceive the landscape as something much larger than a “scene” or “view” as they collect information from it through drawings, color studies, and photographs. In the studio, we consider ways to integrate these multiple aspects of place into a single, mixed-media composition (acrylic paint, charcoal, pastel, crayon, colored pencil) that draws upon the fundamentals of art: line, shape, color, value, texture and composition. Participants will seek correspondences in the landscape with respect to these fundamentals based on written prompts: e.g. “Locate an element that speaks to texture, to line, to value.” Combining such elements will result in a rich, dynamic representation of landscape.

Materials provided are: 22” x 30” sheets of Arches watercolor paper for the final project, willow charcoal and Marabu art crayons. Students should bring acrylic paint, brushes, sketchbook, drawing pencils for plein air studies, pastels and colored pencils.
