Teaching artists keep the arts alive! Teaching artists are practicing, professional artists who have dual careers as educators. They come from every artistic field and work in many settings. The teaching artists play an integral role in the fabric of the BAI, the community, provide high-quality, creative, lifelong learning experiences to people of all ages and abilities. Our mission is to connect artists with opportunities to engage the community in making art. In doing so, the BAI is always looking for the right fit and to keep it affordable for the students. With your class fee, we create an open art space for the community and support our working artists. If you are interested in teaching an art class and would like to join us, please email our programs manager, Glenna Smith at Glenna.Smith@borregoartinstitute.org.

    December 10, 2002  1:00 pm to 3:00 pm

Come meet local author and artist, Joya Granberry Hoyt, for a special book signing event. Expressive Arts Your Way:  A Workbook for Children and Adultsis a collection of beautifully illustrated lesson plans for creative art projects. It is based on the Borrego Springs, Outside the Box Middle School Science and Art Project, that was sponsored by the American Legion and the Women's Auxiliary of Borrego Springs.

This is a free event at the BAI gallery.

    Artist Bio

Joya Granbery Hoyt, a seasonal resident of Borrego Springs since 1985 created and developed Outside the Box the Borrego Springs Middle School Science and Art Project with her sister Pamela Granbery to give middle school students an opportunity to enhance their school experience with classes taught by Borrego Springs volunteers in subjects ranging from architecture and astronomy to taxidermy and cooking.

Student films were shown at the festival and the dance team competed at colleges in the area. Her book, “Expressive Arts Your Way”, follows this program into wide ranging lessons and experiences for students of all ages.

Joya's career in Dance and Film and teaching at half a dozen universities brought her to Borrego Springs and to a long-term commitment to bettering the lives of children and adults and animals in the desert through programs like backpack lunch, the Tuki collar sox animal support program and art exhibits of student work in area galleries. Her performance pieces in the desert can be seen on You Tube under Joya Granbery Hoyt.

The Art of Travel Sketching, with Kristen Olson Stone

    December 14, 2022, This is a 1-day class from 10 am-3 pm.

    Community Resource Center
587 Palm Canyon Dr., Suite 125
    Borrego springs, CA 92004

People want to paint and draw but have been afraid or discouraged. So even if you're new, this is for you! I'll demonstrate, step by step, a method that will help turn anyone into an enthusiastic watercolor sketcher with no experience needed at all - it's fun too, so take out your sketchbook anytime, anywhere. This relaxed style of travel sketching teaches you how to put down what you see around you, it could be your morning cup of coffee, the view from your window, a tree, a gate, absolutely anything that catches your eye.  I'll also show you how to draw and paint from your favorite travel photos.

Travel sketching enhances the experience of being wherever you are in the world.  It can become a regular part of your life as well.  I'm not kidding; people love the idea of being able to free their creativity without worrying about ruining their clothes. The beautiful part? You don't need expensive, bulky supplies either, your entire sketching kit can fit into a small purse or bag, ready anytime.  Absolutely anyone can learn to sketch; it's the perfect thing for complete beginners as well as experienced artists working in other mediums such as oil and acrylic.  Bring along your favorite travel photos or iPad, or you can enjoy the park for inspiration.  You'll learn a skill so you can create your own sketch journals filled with lovely memories of places you love, who cares if they aren't perfect, they're just for you anyway!

Pack a lunch and take a break whenever you feel like it.

Kristen will begin the class with a morning demonstration, then for the rest of the day she will offer individual help to each of the attendees. This will be a small class so you will get a lot of personal help. Minimum 7 students and maximum 12 students.

Kristen is an artist ambassador for Royal Talens, she will bring some samples from Rembrandt paints for all participants.

If you have any questions, email Kristen at kristenpaints@gmail.com.

Material List for this class Supplies are included in this class! If you prefer your own watercolor box and or paper, please bring them to the class.

Blackout Poetry Workshop, with Michelle Hedgecock

    January 7, 2023 10am-1pm at CRC

(3-hours) Learn how to create blackout poetry! Blackout poetry is a fun exploration of word play, beginning with a source of printed text and creating a new story or meaning by “redacting” or blacking out existing text. Discover the origins of this fairly recent artistic, literary phenomenon. There will be plenty of examples, resources, and ample time for creating your own blackout poems as we explore a variety of blackout poem types, artists, and styles. I will share my tricks and tips on creating and editing your own blackout creations as well as ideas for embellishing and enhancing your blackout poems through artsy, inventive techniques. Watch your own blackout poetry style emerge as you practice and create throughout the workshop! The results can be poetic, profound, silly/humorous, radical, provocative, inspiring and often unexpected—yet always fun.

No artistic/writing experience required. All basic materials and print sources (recycled magazines, thrifted/damaged books, outdated science/nature texts) will be available for you to create your own blackout poems during this workshop. You are welcome to bring your own print resource—that you don’t mind blacking out/cutting up!

    Materials provided.

Please, bring any additional art materials for embellishing your poetry

    January 17, 2023, 9:00AM - 4:30PM

This is an intensive 1-day class for anyone who would like to learn the basics of how to paint but doesn’t have the schedule to do a 10-part weekly class, or for those who have painted years ago and could use a refresher. Jeni teaches the class in watercolor, but the first three parts translate to all colored mediums (acrylic, oil, pastel, and to a certain extent, colored pencil).

All materials are provided. Wear clothing that you won’t worry about if you splash paint on it, though watercolor is not an especially messy medium. You will work hard and you will learn a lot! You will go home with a number of reference exercises and online access to class materials, plus follow-on exercises. This class is great for ages 16 and up.

The class is held at the Borrego Art Institute in the Gallery.

Artist Bio
San Diego based Fine Art Photographer creating Photographic Art since 2007.
Our natural world has served as the palette for art ever since Man picked up a rock and began drawing, writing, and sculpting. Nature is a part of us and the way an artist sees and conveys it says as much about the artist as it does the world. I’m grateful to be living in the 21st century when digital photography can help me express my artistic vision of our natural world. As a photographer, I am happiest shooting outdoors—taking in the sky, the surroundings, the colors and forms—and capturing the raw material that later, through digital process, I will finesse into images that transcend simple representation and become works of art that I hope people will find moving, inspiring and noteworthy.

Connecting Eyes, Heart, Hand, with Natasha Isenhour

      March 13-16, 2023, 9:00am-3:00pm
      Registration Deadline: March 03, 2023

      * All 2-D Mediums Welcome *
A comprehensive, deep diving, overview of applying the philosophy that your art is a manifestation of what you observe (eyes), combined with your emotional response (heart) and the expression of it with your hand.

Learn to develop your skill as a painter in this four-day intensive class where you will dig deeper into how to express your subjects using my intuitive approach while working with your unique voice.  All 2-D mediums are welcome! My expertise is in oil, pastel and watercolor, but the principles of composition, color, temperature and value are universal.

We will explore materials, methods and techniques to help you represent your subject.  This is about learning to paint in your own unique voice, not a formula seeking to teach all students to paint the same way. Through discussion and abundant studio time, you will be learning your personal path toward being the one-of-a-kind artist that you are.

As my former students attest, my singular goal is to have you leave a better artist, a better version of YOU. Some prior knowledge of the medium is required, however, weekenders, hobbyists as well as professionals will all gain personal power and artistic awareness in this opportunity.

Painting in plein air throughout the year informs her studio work through the on-site study of value and color temperature as it can only be seen with the eye.

Isenhour’s second solo museum exhibition was held in the Fall of 22 at the Taos Art Museum. Natasha was awarded  the “People’s Choice Award” of the Plein Air Invitational 2022 at the Borrego Art Institute. In the Fall of 21, Isenhour was one of the 5 To Watch in Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine, and in the summer of 2020 she was honored with a 6 page feature in Art of the West Magazine along with several other inclusions in 20-21 in Southwest Art Magazine and Plein Air Magazine.
