Teaching artists keep the arts alive! Teaching artists are practicing, professional artists who have dual careers as educators. They come from every artistic field and work in many settings. The teaching artists play an integral role in the fabric of the BAI, the community, provide high-quality, creative, lifelong learning experiences to people of all ages and abilities. Our mission is to connect artists with opportunities to engage the community in making art. In doing so, the BAI is always looking for the right fit and to keep it affordable for the students. With your class fee, we create an open art space for the community and support our working artists. If you are interested in teaching an art class and would like to join us, please email rossy.sanchez@borregoartinstitute.org.

A Mixed-Media Approach for Investigating Landscape, with Kenneth Marunowski

    March 24, 25, 26  from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm at BAI Gallery

In this 3-day workshop, participants perceive the landscape as something much larger than a “scene” or “view” as they collect information from it through drawings, color studies, and photographs. In the studio, we consider ways to integrate these multiple aspects of place into a single, mixed-media composition (acrylic paint, charcoal, pastel, crayon, colored pencil) that draws upon the fundamentals of art: line, shape, color, value, texture and composition. Participants will seek correspondences in the landscape with respect to these fundamentals based on written prompts: e.g. “Locate an element that speaks to texture, to line, to value.” Combining such elements will result in a rich, dynamic representation of landscape.

Materials provided are: 22” x 30” sheets of Arches watercolor paper for the final project, willow charcoal and Marabu art crayons.
Students should bring acrylic paint, brushes, sketchbook, drawing
pencils for plein air studies, pastels and colored pencils.

    Artist Bio
Kenneth Marunowski is an artist, educator and writer who lives and works in Bend, Oregon. Hailing from Cleveland, Ohio, Ken grew up enjoying the cultural amenities of a big city and the spacious beauty of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Marunowski’s passion for culture and nature took him to Kent State University where he received degrees in French and Painting, the beginnings of a lifelong investigation of language and image that continued through his Masters and PhD studies in literacy and rhetoric. For several years, Marunowski taught professional writing at the University of Minnesota Duluth before dedicating himself completely to his painting practice. Now a full time artist, Ken shares his rigorous pursuit of abstract and representational painting not only through the works he creates but also through teaching both privately and publicly in the United States and in southwest France where he was recently named Associate Teacher and Program Administrator of the Painting School of Montmiral.

    Bio

Sonja Kodimer is passionate about the process of carefully observing and translating real life objects into beautiful paintings. She views the process as deeply meditative and reflective, a sharp antithesis to a world that encourages us to be reactive, seek instant gratification and spend little time observing ourselves and our reactions. Sonja has studied with Studio Escalier in Argenton-Chateau, France and the Ryder Studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Painting for Absolute Beginners with Jeni Bate

    Saturday, April 23, 2023  9:00AM - 4:30PM

This is an intensive 1-day class for anyone who would like to learn the basics of how to paint but doesn’t have the schedule to do a 10-part weekly class, or for those who have painted years ago and could use a refresher. Jeni teaches the class in watercolor, but the first three parts translate to all colored mediums (acrylic, oil, pastel, and to a certain extent, colored pencil).

    Location:
    Community Resource Center
587 Palm Canyon Dr., Suite 125
    Borrego springs, CA 92004

All materials are provided. Wear clothing that you won’t worry about if you splash paint on it, though watercolor is not an especially messy medium. You will work hard and you will learn a lot! You will go home with a number of reference exercises and online access to class materials, plus follow-on exercises. This class is great for ages 16 and up.
