  “The Silent Guitar”
a collection of paintings by Sharif Carter

     October 2 - 31, 2021

“The Silent Guitar” is a collection of paintings featuring a flamenco dancer wanted by law set in the desert heat of Old World Spain with the sky set ablaze with brilliant oranges, yellows, and reds. Her flowing red dress embodies her sass and sex appeal, and a low-hanging Andalusian hat conceals her identity.  She wields guitars with sharp edges as her weaponry, sometimes accompanied with spears for added force. The loose brushstrokes and abstract guitars represent Sharif’s love of music and his defiance to follow traditional rules both in life and his painting technique.

About Sharif Carter

Born in Seattle, Sharif’s artistic foundation began as an automotive engineer designing vehicle components for Honda, Ford, & GM. He returned to his passion for painting after moving to Temecula in 2006. After being engulfed in San Diego’s art scene, he found his voice and created three distinct bodies of work: a Spanish series featuring a flamenco dancer in a red dress, a modern jazz series featuring bright colors on black canvases, and a poker series where iconic figures from music and film have playing card symbols etched on their face and body.

Violating traditional methods, Sharif paints with an unusual technique of combining opaque watercolors with oil mediums on handcrafted wood panels that produce vivid imagery and mesmerizing fluidity as if subjects dance across the canvas.

Today you’ll find Sharif painting live under the glow of the moon at nightclubs, bars, or any place where the atmosphere is electric, and music fills the night air. In his words, “the ultimate art studio.”

Sharif’s art is currently featured on Wiens Family Cellars wine labels in Temecula Valley, winning several label design competitions.
